Senegal names new Government in first test for Faye’s promised radical reforms

Senegal names new Government

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, under the approval of President Bassirou Diomaye, announced the formation of a new government on Friday, introducing a cabinet comprising 25 ministers and 5 junior ministers.

This development follows President Diomaye’s recent inauguration as Senegal’s fifth head of state, where he succeeded after a significant electoral win against former President Macky Sall.

The formation of the government marks a critical phase in Diomaye’s administration, which has promised bold reforms that have captured both local and international attention.

Among the notable pledges is the decision to abandon the West African CFA Franc, a move that underscores Senegal’s push for greater economic autonomy.

Additionally, the new administration plans to audit oil and gas contracts previously signed with foreign entities, signaling a potential overhaul in how Senegal manages its natural resources.
