Poland and Greece urge EU to create common air shield

“We have to have a common air defense shield for all of Europe, like it was proposed by Mitsotakis and Tusk,” the Commission chief said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed support for a proposal from Polish and Greek Prime Ministers Donald Tusk and Kyriakos Mitsotakis to establish an EU-funded air defense shield.

In a letter dated Thursday addressed to the Commission chief, obtained by POLITICO and initially reported by Bloomberg, Tusk and Mitsotakis argued, “The current fragmented landscape is simply not up to today’s needs and requirements.”

“The skies over Europe must be secure for Europe to be secure,” the letter emphasized, outlining the necessity for a European air defense system to safeguard the common airspace against various threats, including aircraft, missiles, and drones.
