The announcement comes just ahead of the panel’s scheduled meeting this week, where members are expected to review vaccine recommendations for hepatitis B, measles-mumps-rubella-varicella, and COVID-19. The session is drawing significant attention due to its potential impact on national vaccination policy.

In June, Kennedy removed all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices and began assembling a smaller group more aligned with his stance on vaccines. The revamped committee will now consist of 12 members, including the five newly announced.

According to a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the following individuals are joining the committee and will participate in this week’s discussions:

• Dr. Kirk Milhoan, a paediatric cardiologist who has researched myocarditis linked to COVID-19 vaccines and previously supported treatments for COVID-19 that were not endorsed by major public health agencies.

• Dr. Catherine Stein, an epidemiologist at Case Western Reserve University, known for opposing vaccine mandates on college campuses in 2022.

• Hilary Blackburn, a pharmacist from St. Louis, Missouri, and the daughter-in-law of U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn.

• Dr. Raymond Pollak, a semi-retired transplant surgeon with expertise in immunology.

• Dr. Evelyn Griffin, an obstetrician from Louisiana who has publicly criticized COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Funds Minister Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz announced that no more payments will be made until each of the approximately 2,400 grants—totalling around 1.2 billion złoty (€282.3 million)—undergoes a thorough audit. “Every złoty will be scrutinised,” she said, attributing the current issues to rules established by the previous government. The goal is to maintain public confidence in EU funding and ensure the money reaches its intended recipients.

So far, about 110 million złoty (€25.8 million) has been distributed, while the remainder of the program’s budget remains frozen.

This support scheme, part of Poland’s delayed EU Covid recovery effort, was meant to help small tourism and hospitality businesses recover and diversify post-pandemic.

The broader EU recovery funds, worth €59.8 billion for Poland, were held up for years due to political disputes under the former administration. Their release marked a significant achievement for Prime Minister Donald Tusk following his 2023 election win.

However, an interactive map released last week showing recipients sparked public outrage by highlighting questionable purchases, including luxury boats, furniture, and a grant linked to a swingers’ club’s address.

The opposition has used this controversy to criticise the current government, accusing it of favouritism and financial mismanagement, and exposing divisions within the ruling coalition.

“These funds were supposed to rebuild Poland and create jobs,” said an opposition spokesperson. “Instead, what we see is a huge mess and debt that will burden everyone.”

In response, Prime Minister Tusk defended his administration, blaming the previous government for delaying the funds and forcing a hurried distribution process.

“The full responsibility for this prolonged issue lies with our predecessors who blocked the funds for years, leaving us little time to allocate them properly to Polish businesses,” he said. “To get the money out quickly, the ministry relaxed rules, which unfortunately allowed some misuse.”

A spokesperson from the European Commission confirmed that the situation is being monitored closely but emphasised that managing the funds is Warsaw’s responsibility.

A document from the Commission, shared recently with The New York Times, reveals that von der Leyen’s chief of staff in mid-2021 found the messages sent ahead of a multibillion-euro vaccine agreement between Pfizer and the EU. The document explains that because the messages were logistical and “short-lived,” they were not considered important enough to be formally archived.

Since then, von der Leyen’s mobile phone has been replaced multiple times, and the data was not transferred to new devices. In May, a lower EU court ruled that the executive branch was wrong not to release these texts. The Commission has now decided not to appeal this ruling in a higher court.

The case sparked debate among transparency advocates, who saw it as evidence of a lack of accountability within the Commission, as well as among critics of the vaccine. In early July, von der Leyen survived a no-confidence vote in the European Parliament triggered by a Romanian MEP over this issue.

Kennedy, a former attorney who represented individuals claiming vaccine-related injuries, is taking direct action to fix what he describes as a deeply flawed program. “I will not allow the VICP to continue to ignore its mandate,” Kennedy wrote in a recent post on X, emphasising his commitment to ensuring that individuals harmed by vaccines receive timely and just compensation. He also noted his collaboration with Attorney General Pam Bondi to return the Vaccine Court to its original mission as envisioned by Congress.

A key concern Kennedy raised is the program’s structural conflict of interest: the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the program, also acts as the legal defence against claimants. This, he argues, places injured individuals at an unfair disadvantage and undermines public trust in the system.

Kennedy’s reforms reflect a broader initiative to increase transparency and accountability in federal health agencies. In June, he replaced the CDC’s 17-member Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices with a new group that includes voices outside the traditional public health establishment — a move that many see as a step toward diversifying perspectives and breaking what critics call a “groupthink” culture within federal advisory panels.

One new committee member has experience serving as an expert witness in litigation involving Merck’s Gardasil vaccine — bringing real-world, legal insight into the consequences of medical decisions and corporate accountability. Kennedy himself has advocated for victims of alleged vaccine injury in the past, showing consistent concern for those who feel unheard by the system.

Further changes may be coming. Kennedy is reportedly considering overhauling the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the panel responsible for determining which preventive treatments insurance must cover. Reform advocates say the task force wields enormous influence without sufficient public input or oversight.

Kennedy’s critics accuse him of spreading vaccine misinformation, but supporters argue that his efforts are about restoring public confidence through transparency and accountability — not rejecting science. They see his campaign as a necessary check on entrenched pharmaceutical interests and an overdue correction to systems that have too often failed to serve patients first.

By pushing for reform, Kennedy is challenging a status quo that has left many vaccine-injured individuals in bureaucratic limbo. His actions signal a commitment to government accountability, medical justice, and putting people — not profits — at the centre of health policy.

The documents, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, include internal DOJ correspondence discussing a letter from the National School Boards Association (NSBA). That letter asked for federal intervention in response to what it described as increasing threats and acts of violence against school officials and educators across the country.

Just days after the letter was sent, Attorney General Merrick Garland—serving under President Biden—issued a memo directing federal law enforcement to assist local agencies in addressing what he called a troubling rise in harassment and intimidation of school personnel.

Critics argued that the move infringed on the rights of parents to freely speak at public meetings. While Garland maintained that the DOJ acted independently from the White House, the emails suggest the administration was already engaged on the matter. In one exchange, a DOJ official noted that the “White House has been in touch” regarding how the department might respond.

Further communications show that over the following weekend, DOJ staff were asked to urgently identify any legal authorities under civil rights laws that could apply to the situation. However, several DOJ attorneys expressed skepticism about the federal government’s role, with one noting that nearly all of the behaviour cited in the NSBA letter appeared to fall outside federal jurisdiction and was likely protected by the First Amendment.

Despite internal concerns about overreach and the lack of a clear federal basis for action, the memo was ultimately issued. The emails raise questions about the Biden administration’s involvement and its motivations, particularly as they relate to political timing and potential efforts to discourage public dissent.

Dr. Lakshmi Panagiotakopoulos, a pediatric infectious disease expert, resigned on Tuesday as co-leader of a CDC working group that provides guidance on COVID-19 vaccines and is also leaving the agency. In an email to her colleagues, she explained that her decision was driven by the feeling that she could no longer effectively support the most vulnerable populations in the U.S.

In her position with the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) working group, she helped oversee the collection and presentation of vaccine-related information.

Her resignation comes shortly after Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his skepticism about vaccines, announced the removal of the COVID vaccine for healthy children and pregnant women from the CDC’s recommended immunization schedule. Kennedy leads the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the CDC, FDA, and NIH.

This action diverged from the typical procedure, where ACIP experts review and vote on immunization schedule updates before the agency’s director finalizes decisions. The committee had not voted on this recent change, and the CDC currently lacks a permanent director.

An HHS spokesperson described Panagiotakopoulos’ departure as a personal choice that does not affect the government’s commitment to public health.

The advisory committee is expected to convene June 25-27 to discuss and vote on COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, according to one of the sources.

At the last ACIP meeting in mid-April, Panagiotakopoulos presented data on Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine and discussed potential vaccination strategies for 2025-26. Options included maintaining current broad recommendations or narrowing vaccine use to certain groups.

The working group had been leaning toward a more targeted approach but was expected to recommend broader vaccine use for specific high-risk populations, such as very young children and pregnant women vulnerable to severe COVID-19.

A strong, inclusive recommendation for these groups would encourage healthcare providers and insurers to prioritize vaccination and coverage for these populations.

Despite recent unexpected changes to the immunization schedule, the working group continues to meet and prepare recommendations for the full ACIP panel’s upcoming session.
