A towering new statue of Jesus Christ has been unveiled near the Lebanon-Syria border, marking a significant cultural and religious landmark in the region.

The monument, installed on the Mount of the Cross in the town of Al-Qaa, rises 16 meters high atop a 10 meter base, making it one of the largest representations of Christ in the Middle East. Overlooking the Bekaa Valley and parts of neighboring Syria, the statue is intended as a message of peace and hope in an area long affected by conflict.

The project was designed and largely funded by a local resident in collaboration with the Al-Qaa municipality. It reflects the strong Christian identity of the town, which is home to communities such as the Maronite Church and Greek Catholic Church.

Residents say the statue also stands as a symbol of resilience. In 2016, Al-Qaa was the site of deadly attacks carried out by militants linked to the Islamic State, an घटना that deeply impacted the local population. Since then, the community has worked to rebuild and reinforce its presence in the region.

The Lebanon-Syria border area, particularly the Bekaa Valley, has been significantly affected by the spillover from the Syrian civil war. Cross-border tensions, security concerns, and refugee flows have shaped daily life for residents on both sides of the frontier.

Despite these challenges, communities like Al-Qaa have maintained strong religious and cultural traditions, often using symbols such as this newly erected statue to express unity and perseverance.

Local leaders hope the monument will not only attract visitors but also serve as a lasting reminder of faith, peace, and endurance in a region that continues to navigate uncertainty.
