The Trump administration has recently reduced much of its foreign aid to Africa, aiming to cut spending it views as inefficient and inconsistent with its “America First” approach. Instead, the focus is shifting toward fostering trade, investment, and shared economic growth.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized this change by stating the U.S. is moving away from a charity-driven approach, prioritizing partnerships with nations that show both the capacity and commitment to support themselves.

In line with this strategy, U.S. diplomats in Africa will be evaluated based on the commercial agreements they secure, as explained by a senior official in African Affairs earlier this year. This marks a shift in how the U.S. plans to engage with the continent moving forward.
