“The government of Colombia has let the U.S. government know … that we are going to keep coordinating and cooperating in the fight against drug trafficking,” Interior Minister Armando Benedetti said in a video with Justice Minister Andres Idarraga.

Benedetti noted that Colombia’s operations will focus on drug labs, criminal organisations, and their camps.

“We will continue to emphasise the fight against this scourge, particularly on the Colombian-Venezuelan border,” Idarraga added.

The announcement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump called Colombian President Gustavo Petro “sick” and suggested a possible U.S. military operation in the country. Colombian officials criticised these remarks as “undue interference.”

Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez described the situation as a “golden opportunity” to strengthen international collaboration against drug trafficking. The U.S. has been pressing Colombia to step up efforts as coca leaf cultivation rises. Petro’s government reports record cocaine seizures, including nearly 1,000 metric tons in 2025.
