Bukele has been praised by Trump for accepting detainees from the United States, including individuals accused of gang involvement, and housing them in a high-security prison system.

Under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, the Trump administration has deported hundreds of Venezuelans to El Salvador, including a Maryland man who was later acknowledged to have been removed by mistake.

Since taking office with a vow to overhaul immigration, Trump has found a close partner in Bukele. El Salvador has agreed to accept deported individuals, many of whom are placed in facilities criticized for harsh conditions and alleged human rights violations.

The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) at the White House.

On Sunday, Trump praised Bukele’s handling of the detainees, stating, “He’s doing a fantastic job and saving us the cost of dealing with these individuals ourselves.” Trump referred to the prisoners as dangerous criminals, including murderers and drug traffickers. When asked about reports of abuse in El Salvador’s mega-prison, Trump responded, “I don’t see it.”

On Saturday, the U.S. deported 10 more people it claims are gang members to El Salvador. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the partnership with Bukele an example of how to promote security and stability across the region.

However, attorneys and relatives of those detained argue that many of the deportees were wrongly accused and had no chance to challenge the allegations. U.S. officials say they vetted the individuals and identified them as members of Tren de Aragua, which is classified as a terrorist group.

One case drawing attention is that of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a resident of Maryland, who was deported on March 15 despite a court order meant to block his removal. He is now being held at El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a judge’s order requiring the administration to help facilitate his return, but also questioned whether the court had the authority to enforce it. Trump said on Friday that if the court gives a direct order, the administration will comply. However, in a legal filing on Sunday, the government stated it is not responsible for securing Abrego Garcia’s release from the Salvadoran prison.

Meanwhile, Bukele responded to a judge’s earlier order to reverse deportation flights with a post on social media, saying “Oopsie… Too late,” alongside a video of men being taken off a plane at night.
