The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Republican Congressman James Comer, issued subpoenas in August demanding testimony from the Clintons as part of a broader review into the U.S. government’s handling of the Epstein case. Comer said the investigation aims to examine potential institutional failures and the extent of Epstein’s connections to powerful political figures.

In a joint response, the Clintons said they would not testify, arguing that the probe is politically motivated and lacks a legitimate legislative purpose. Their refusal has prompted House Republicans to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings against Bill Clinton, a move that could deepen partisan divisions in Washington.

Epstein, a wealthy financier with ties to global elites, died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, sparking widespread scrutiny and conspiracy theories. His death was ruled a suicide, but questions surrounding his prosecution and alleged protection by influential figures have persisted.

Republicans say the Clintons’ refusal to testify raises serious transparency concerns, while Democrats accuse the committee of using the Epstein case to target political opponents ahead of elections. Legal experts note that contempt proceedings against former presidents are rare and largely symbolic, though they can carry political consequences.

The House Oversight Committee said it would continue its investigation and consider further legal steps to compel cooperation from witnesses.
