According to Ali Sabry, the rescue operation was carried out after Sri Lanka received an emergency alert regarding a vessel flying the Iranian flag that had encountered technical difficulties at sea. The ship was reportedly experiencing engine failure and was stranded amid rough weather conditions.

Swift Naval Response

The Sri Lanka Navy deployed a patrol vessel shortly after receiving distress signals through maritime coordination channels. Rescue teams reached the distressed vessel after several hours and assessed the safety of those on board.

“All 30 individuals have been rescued safely,” Sabry said in a statement. “Sri Lanka remains committed to ensuring the safety of life at sea, irrespective of nationality.”

Naval officials reported that the rescued individuals included crew members and possibly additional passengers. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported, though several individuals were treated for dehydration and fatigue.

International Coordination

The operation was coordinated in consultation with maritime authorities and diplomatic channels. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is working closely with Iranian officials to facilitate consular access and determine the next steps for the rescued individuals.

Iran’s diplomatic representatives expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s swift response, officials said. The vessel’s exact departure point and destination have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Naval engineers are inspecting the ship to determine whether it can be repaired at sea or requires towing to a Sri Lankan port for further assessment.

Foreign Minister Sabry emphasized that humanitarian considerations remain the priority. “Saving lives at sea transcends politics,” he stated. “We acted in accordance with international maritime law and humanitarian principles.”
