On the eve of the negotiations, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Iran’s refusal to include its intercontinental ballistic missile development in the talks as a major obstacle. Rubio stated that beyond nuclear concerns, Iran’s conventional weapons capabilities were “solely designed to attack America and attack Americans, if they so choose to do so,” adding that these issues “have to be addressed” in any comprehensive deal.

The deployment of the Gerald R. Ford adds to an expanding U.S. military presence in the region. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group is already operating in Middle Eastern waters, supported by guided-missile destroyers, advanced fighter jets, and surveillance aircraft positioned in recent weeks.

Trump also commented on Iran’s political future, stating that a change in power in Tehran “would be best,” underscoring Washington’s hardened stance. The remarks are likely to draw sharp responses from Iranian officials and could further complicate diplomatic channels.
