The 2026 G7 summit, scheduled to take place from June 15–17 in Évian-les-Bains, will bring together leaders from the world’s most advanced economies to address global economic stability, security challenges and ongoing conflicts.

Conflicting Accounts Over South Africa’s Absence

The controversy emerged after South Africa indicated it had been informed that its exclusion from the summit guest list was linked to pressure from Washington. According to officials in Pretoria, the French embassy communicated that the United States had threatened to boycott the gathering if South Africa were invited.

“We’ve accepted the French decision and appreciate the pressure they’ve been subjected to,” said Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa.

However, French officials have strongly rejected this version of events. Paris maintains that the decision was independent and based on its own diplomatic considerations, not external influence.

Instead of South Africa, France has invited Kenya as the African representative, alongside other guest countries including India, Brazil and South Korea. A White House official also supported France’s position, stating that the selection of Kenya was a collective decision among G7 nations rather than a unilateral demand from Washington.
