The announcement marks a new low in inter-Korean relations, coming amid rising military tensions on the peninsula.

Kim accused Seoul of “decades of hostility” and dismissed President Lee’s offer of goodwill initiatives as “delusion and a pipe dream.”

“South Korea cannot be regarded as a diplomatic partner,” Kim said, calling Lee’s outreach “insincere and historically blind.”

The comments coincide with the launch of the Ulchi Freedom Shield, an annual joint military drill between South Korea and the United States, which Pyongyang has condemned as “a rehearsal for invasion.”

Kim also named several South Korean cabinet ministers in her critique, accusing them of aggressive rhetoric and reinforcing the North’s perception of Seoul as a hostile force. She further instructed North Korean diplomats to shift focus away from the South and instead prioritize engagements with what she called “truly strategic or adversarial nations.”

Background:

President Lee Jae-myung, elected earlier this year, has attempted to adopt a balanced approach to Pyongyang combining pressure with offers of humanitarian cooperation. However, his efforts have largely been met with silence or rejection.

This latest rebuke from Pyongyang underscores a continued shift in North Korea’s foreign policy posture, favoring a more confrontational tone with the South while strengthening ties with Russia and China.

The North has recently resumed missile launches and weapons testing, and is reportedly expanding military cooperation with Moscow in defiance of U.N. sanctions.

Kim Jong Un Reaffirms Support for Putin, Calls Russia a ‘Comrade-in-Arms’ https://ln24international.com/2025/06/12/kim-jong-un-reaffirms-support-for-putin-calls-russia-a-comrade-in-arms/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kim-jong-un-reaffirms-support-for-putin-calls-russia-a-comrade-in-arms https://ln24international.com/2025/06/12/kim-jong-un-reaffirms-support-for-putin-calls-russia-a-comrade-in-arms/#respond Thu, 12 Jun 2025 07:49:45 +0000 https://ln24international.com/?p=25052 In a message marking Russia Day, North Korea’s leader underscores growing alignment with Moscow amid global tensions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a message of unwavering support to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, reaffirming Pyongyang’s strategic alignment with Moscow. The message, delivered on the occasion of Russia Day,  highlighting the countries’ deepening ties.

In his statement, Kim called Putin his “dearest comrade” and praised the relationship between their nations as a “genuine relationship between comrades-in-arms.” The message emphasized North Korea’s enduring solidarity with Russia in the face of rising global polarization, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and increasing Western sanctions on both nations.

“The traditional DPRK-Russia relations of friendship and cooperation, established on the basis of comrade-in-arms spirit and deep-rooted affinity, are growing stronger with each passing day,” quoted Kim as saying.

The North Korean leader also congratulated Putin and the Russian people on Russia Day a national holiday celebrating Russian sovereignty following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Geopolitical Significance

The message comes at a time when Moscow and Pyongyang have significantly boosted political and military cooperation, drawing concern from Washington and its allies. Western intelligence has pointed to increasing exchanges between the two nations, including suspected arms deals and military technology sharing, as Russia faces pressure on the battlefield in Ukraine and North Korea continues to pursue advanced weapons programs despite UN sanctions.

Analysts say Kim’s statement is more than symbolic. It reflects a broader strategic pivot by both nations toward closer alignment as each becomes more isolated from the West.

“This message reinforces the image of an emerging authoritarian bloc,” said Dr. Rachel Kim, a security analyst at the Asia-Pacific Strategy Institute. “Russia gains a vocal ally in East Asia, while North Korea leverages the relationship for diplomatic cover and possible technological cooperation.”

Moscow’s Response and Broader Reactions

As of Thursday afternoon, the Kremlin had not yet issued an official response to Kim’s message. However, Russian officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of their relationship with North Korea in recent months, particularly as part of a broader strategy to build alliances outside the Western-led order.

The U.S. State Department has condemned any deepening of military ties between the two countries, warning that such collaboration could undermine international sanctions and security efforts in both Eastern Europe and the Korean Peninsula.

Growing Strategic Axis

The message marks another public demonstration of the North Korea-Russia strategic axis, following recent visits by Russian defense officials to Pyongyang and unconfirmed reports of North Korean arms shipments to Russian forces in Ukraine.

With both regimes seeking to counterbalance U.S.-led influence in global affairs, experts expect further coordination in forums such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) or at future multilateral military exercises.
