According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the tremor’s epicenter was located in the town of Sindirgi, but shocks were felt as far as Istanbul, Turkey’s most populous city. At least 29 people were injured in the quake, four of whom were rescued from a collapsed building.

“Most of the collapsed buildings were derelict and unused,” Yerlikaya said in a televised briefing. “Emergency teams responded swiftly to prevent further casualties.”

The lone fatality was a woman who died when her building collapsed in Balikesir. Emergency services and search and rescue teams have been dispatched across the affected region to assess damage and prevent secondary incidents, particularly in older, structurally weak buildings.

Seismologists say Turkey lies on multiple active fault lines and is highly prone to earthquakes, with major tremors occurring periodically in various parts of the country. Authorities have warned residents to remain alert for aftershocks in the coming days.

Conclusion:

While the damage was relatively contained, the incident is a stark reminder of Turkey’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Local officials are urging inspections of older structures and emergency readiness as aftershocks continue to ripple through the region.

Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Western Turkey, Felt in Istanbul https://ln24international.com/2025/08/10/magnitude-6-1-earthquake-strikes-western-turkey-felt-in-istanbul/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=magnitude-6-1-earthquake-strikes-western-turkey-felt-in-istanbul https://ln24international.com/2025/08/10/magnitude-6-1-earthquake-strikes-western-turkey-felt-in-istanbul/#respond Sun, 10 Aug 2025 18:52:40 +0000 https://ln24international.com/?p=26480 A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck western Turkey on Sunday evening, according to the country’s disaster management authority AFAD. The tremor was felt across multiple provinces, including areas near Istanbul, but no casualties or structural damage have been reported so far.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 7:53 PM local time in Balıkesir province, northwest Turkey, AFAD said in a statement. The epicenter was located relatively close to Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city and economic hub, raising concern among residents who reported strong tremors.

Local media outlets reported that the quake was felt in Çanakkale, Bursa, Kütahya, and Istanbul, prompting brief evacuations in some residential buildings and shopping centers. However, authorities confirmed that no injuries or property damage have been officially recorded at this stage.

“Our emergency teams are actively monitoring the situation. At this time, no significant damage has been reported,” AFAD said via social media.

Turkey’s Kandilli Observatory also registered the quake and confirmed its depth to be approximately 10 kilometers, which is considered relatively shallow and can lead to more intense surface shaking.

Turkey sits on multiple active fault lines and is no stranger to seismic activity. In 1999, a 7.6 magnitude quake in nearby Izmit killed over 17,000 people, making any tremor in the region a source of national concern.

Conclusion:

Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant. Emergency protocols have been activated in Balıkesir and surrounding provinces as a precaution.

Turkey’s Pro-Kurdish DEM Party Calls for Legislation to Support PKK Disarmament and Renew Peace Talks https://ln24international.com/2025/04/15/turkeys-pro-kurdish-dem-party-calls-for-legislation-to-support-pkk-disarmament-and-renew-peace-talks/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=turkeys-pro-kurdish-dem-party-calls-for-legislation-to-support-pkk-disarmament-and-renew-peace-talks https://ln24international.com/2025/04/15/turkeys-pro-kurdish-dem-party-calls-for-legislation-to-support-pkk-disarmament-and-renew-peace-talks/#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 13:07:18 +0000 https://ln24international.com/?p=23369 Turkey’s pro-Kurdish DEM Party has called on parliament to take steps toward renewing a peace initiative by passing a law that would support the disarmament of the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The PKK declared a ceasefire in March after its imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan—jailed since 1999—urged the group to lay down arms and dissolve, raising hopes for an end to the decades-long conflict between Kurdish militants and the Turkish state.

While the government led by President Tayyip Erdogan hasn’t officially announced a return to peace talks, the DEM Party has increased pressure for a clear legal and political plan to restart the process. A previous attempt at peace collapsed in 2015, leading to renewed violence.

Speaking in parliament, DEM co-chair Tulay Hatimogullari stressed that achieving a peaceful resolution requires both a legal framework and permission for Ocalan to communicate with the outside world.

“This groundwork can only be laid by granting Mr. Ocalan the ability to engage and by passing legislation that enables the disarmament of the PKK,” she said. “Taking these steps would bring relief to the entire country.”

Last week, DEM described a recent meeting with Erdogan as “constructive and hopeful,” signaling a rare instance of dialogue between the two sides.

The PKK, which is labeled a terrorist group by Turkey and several Western nations, is expected to make a final decision on disarmament and disbandment at a congress that could be held as early as next month.
