Accra, Ghana – Ghana is set to introduce a new national SIM card registration process, scheduled to begin on July 1, 2025, as announced by the country’s Minister for Communications, Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George. This technology-driven initiative aims to simplify the registration process, allowing citizens to register their SIM cards from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for long queues and in-person visits.
The new system is part of Ghana’s broader efforts to digitally overhaul its communications infrastructure, ensuring better service delivery and enhanced security for telecommunications users. The initiative also includes the introduction of a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), which will improve efficiency by providing a comprehensive database of mobile devices in the country.
According to Minister George, this new registration process will not only make it easier for Ghanaians to comply with SIM registration requirements but will also help the government better track mobile phone usage, reduce fraudulent activity, and strengthen national security.
The move is part of Ghana’s ongoing push to modernize its digital infrastructure and ensure that its telecommunications systems meet global standards. As the July launch date approaches, the government is encouraging all citizens to prepare for the transition to the new registration system.
