Italian PM Meloni Expresses Optimism on Tariff Talks with President Trump During White House Visit

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the White House this week, voicing confidence that she and U.S. President Donald Trump could make headway on resolving ongoing trade tariff disputes between the U.S. and Europe.

During a joint appearance, Meloni addressed concerns over retaliatory tariffs recently suspended by the European Commission. While clarifying that she cannot negotiate on behalf of the entire European Union, Meloni stressed her support for progress in diplomatic and economic talks aimed at easing transatlantic trade tensions.

“I’m optimistic that we can reach a fair understanding that benefits both our nations,” Meloni said. “While Italy cannot act for the EU, we are fully committed to working constructively toward solutions.”

The meeting comes at a pivotal time for U.S.-EU trade relations, which have been strained by disputes over tariffs on goods such as steel, aluminum, and agricultural products. Observers say Meloni’s outreach reflects Italy’s desire to balance European unity with national economic interests and to maintain a strong bilateral relationship with the U.S.

President Trump, for his part, welcomed Meloni’s visit, praising Italy as a “valuable partner” and signaling openness to further dialogue.
