Spanish telecom company Telefonica announced on Tuesday that it is investigating a possible cybersecurity incident after a database allegedly containing personal information of one million customers in Peru appeared on an online forum.
“We are looking into a reported security breach. The sample shared by the source, which includes around 1 million records, appears to be linked to our former customers in Peru,” a company representative stated.
A cybersecurity monitoring account on social media platform X reported that a group identifying itself as “Dedale” is offering a database with details on approximately 22 million Telefonica clients. As evidence, the group published a portion of the data said to belong to Peruvian users.
This leak comes shortly after Telefonica’s departure from the Peruvian market. In April, the company finalized the sale of its operations in Peru to Argentine firm Integra Tec International for roughly 900,000 euros (about $1.03 million).
