A large wildfire broke out near the Yefe Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem on Sunday, prompting evacuations and a large-scale emergency response as the blaze threatened nearby landmarks, including the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial.
According to the Israel Fire and Rescue Service, the fire erupted in two separate locations and quickly spread due to dry conditions and strong winds. Officials said 22 fire crews and seven firefighting aircraft were deployed to battle the flames and prevent the fire from advancing into residential areas and sensitive sites.
Some residents of Yefe Nof were evacuated as a precaution, though no injuries have been reported so far.
“We are doing everything possible to contain the fire and protect both lives and property,” a spokesperson for the fire service said. “The situation remains dynamic.”
Firefighters worked through the night with ground and aerial teams, using fire retardants and creating buffer zones to slow the fire’s progress. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze, which broke out during peak wildfire season in Israel.
Yad Vashem, one of Israel’s most important national institutions, has not been evacuated but remains under close watch.
