Two killed and widespread flooding reported in South Chungcheong province as heavy rains continue
Seoul — Two people have died and more than 1,000 residents have been evacuated in South Korea after torrential rain battered parts of the country on Thursday, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
As of 11 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), areas in South Chungcheong province, located south of the capital Seoul, had recorded over 400 millimeters (15.7 inches) of rainfall since Wednesday. The intense downpours triggered flash floods, landslides, and significant damage to infrastructure.
Emergency crews have been deployed to assist with evacuation efforts and assess the damage. Roads and low-lying areas across the region remain submerged, and several train services and flights have been delayed or canceled.
“The situation remains serious, and we urge residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders and safety advisories,” the ministry said in a statement.
Local television footage showed rescue teams wading through waist-deep water, helping residents evacuate from inundated homes and businesses.
South Korea’s weather agency has issued additional heavy rain warnings for central and southern regions, with forecasts predicting more rainfall in the coming days. Officials are also monitoring river levels and dam capacities to prevent further flooding.
