Satellite Images Reveal New Maritime Pier at North Korea’s Sohae Rocket Facility

New infrastructure may support larger missile transport, analysts say

Seoul — Satellite imagery reveals that North Korea has completed construction of a new maritime pier at its Sohae Satellite Launching Station, a key site used for recent spy satellite launches and long-range rocket tests, according to satellite analytics company ICEYE.

The images, taken earlier this week, show a completed pier structure along the coast near the Sohae facility. Analysts say the development may significantly enhance North Korea’s logistical capacity, allowing for the transport of larger rocket components and heavy equipment by sea.

“The new pier enables the movement of larger rocket stages and fuel systems, which suggests that North Korea is preparing for more advanced launch operations,” ICEYE said in a statement released Thursday.

Sohae, located on the country’s northwestern coast, has been central to Pyongyang’s efforts to develop space and missile technology. The facility has been the launch site for several recent military reconnaissance satellites, as well as earlier long-range ballistic missile tests condemned by the international community.

The new infrastructure comes amid increased scrutiny of North Korea’s weapons development following multiple satellite and missile launches in recent months. South Korean and U.S. officials have warned that Pyongyang appears to be accelerating its space and military programs in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

There has been no official comment from North Korean state media regarding the pier’s construction or its intended use.
