India Pushes for Balanced U.S. Relations After Tariff Hike

India expressed its desire on Thursday for its relationship with the United States to progress based on mutual respect and common interests. This statement came amid concerns that recent tensions—particularly over new U.S. tariffs—might strain the partnership.

According to the Indian foreign ministry, a U.S. defence delegation is scheduled to visit New Delhi this month for discussions, and ongoing military purchases from the U.S. remain unaffected by the recent friction.

The bond between the two nations, which has grown significantly in recent decades, has recently faced difficulties after U.S. President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Indian exports to 50%, up from 25%. The decision was framed as a response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

India has criticised the tariff hike, calling it unfair and unreasonable, and accused Washington of applying double standards by targeting New Delhi over energy imports from Russia.

Despite this, Indian officials have emphasised that the bilateral relationship extends beyond trade. They pointed out that cooperation spans multiple areas and should not be judged solely by commercial disagreements. India also expressed hope that ongoing trade discussions will lead to a resolution.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated at a press briefing, “This partnership has endured various changes and challenges… and we are optimistic that it will continue to move forward with mutual respect and shared objectives.”

Jaiswal confirmed that defence acquisitions from the U.S. are proceeding as planned and that a team of American defence officials will be in Delhi later this month.

Recent claims that India had suspended negotiations on U.S. arms deals and canceled a planned visit by its defence minister were later denied by the Indian government, which clarified that the reports were inaccurate.
