German Lawmakers Urge Lifting of Arms Export Ban on Israel Following Peace Deal

Two senior German lawmakers have called for the government to lift restrictions on arms exports to Israel following a recent peace agreement.

In August, Germany partially suspended weapons shipments to Israel, specifically those deemed usable in Gaza, and has not approved any new exports since. With Israel pausing its military operations, the leaders of the ruling conservative parliamentary group said the export ban should now be reconsidered.

Alexander Hoffmann, parliamentary group leader of the CSU, stated that sanctions on Israel should be lifted immediately. Jens Spahn, leader of the CDU parliamentary group, said the final decision would be made by the Federal Security Council, which advises on national security issues, and expressed confidence that the council would likely support lifting the restrictions.

The calls come after Israel and Hamas reached a U.S.-brokered peace deal following two years of conflict resulting in significant casualties, including over 60,000 Palestinians.

Germany, a longtime ally of Israel, had taken a more critical stance on the Israeli military operations in recent months. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has not committed Germany to supporting proposed European Union sanctions against Israel, which include partially suspending the EU–Israel Association Agreement and sanctioning two ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. The European Commission has indicated these measures could be adjusted depending on developments in Gaza, with further discussion planned at the EU foreign ministers’ meeting on October 20.
