Russia Conducts Strategic Missile Drills After Summit Delay

Russian President Vladimir Putin has overseen a major strategic nuclear forces exercise involving the mock launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine launched missiles, and cruise missiles from strategic bombers, the Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday.

According to officials, the drills were aimed at testing the readiness and command structure of Russia’s strategic deterrence forces. The Kremlin described the exercises as “completely successful” and emphasized that they had been scheduled in advance as part of routine military preparations.

The exercises coincided with NATO’s annual nuclear deterrence training, a timing that underscores heightened tensions between Moscow and the West following the postponement of Putin’s planned summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a statement, the Kremlin reiterated that the drills were not a response to any current political developments but part of regular military readiness evaluations. Defense analysts say such exercises serve to project strength and verify command procedures for Russia’s nuclear arsenal amid ongoing geopolitical strain.
