Trump Announces 10% Tariff Increase on Canada Following World Series Advertisement

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday a 10% increase in tariffs on Canada, citing an advertisement from Ontario that aired during the World Series broadcast.

The ad features former U.S. President Ronald Reagan warning that tariffs lead to “trade wars and economic disaster.” Trump called the ad misleading and suspended trade talks with Ottawa after first reacting to it on Thursday.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Friday that, after discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ontario would pause its U.S. advertising campaign on Monday to allow trade negotiations to resume. The ad aired Friday during Game 1 of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” Trump posted.

“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,” he wrote.

Trump made the announcement aboard Air Force One while traveling to Malaysia, the first stop on a trade-focused East Asia trip. The U.S. Commerce Department, the White House, and the Canadian prime minister’s office did not immediately comment.

It remains unclear which Canadian goods will be affected. Most exports are exempt under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In August, the U.S. imposed a 35% tariff on Canadian products not covered by the deal, along with 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium earlier this year.

Carney said Canada is ready to resume trade discussions. The Ontario ad uses excerpts from a Reagan speech edited out of sequence and omits that Reagan described certain tariffs on Japan as exceptions to his general support for free trade.
