President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on Christians across Uganda to uphold the values of hard work, discipline, and productivity, describing them as essential virtues for both spiritual and national development.
Speaking during celebrations marking 100 years of St. Mary’s Lubaga Cathedral, one of Uganda’s oldest and most iconic places of worship, Museveni said that hard work forms the foundation for prosperity and divine blessing.
“True faith is not just about prayer but about transforming that faith into tangible results through work,” President Museveni said. “When we work hard, we uplift our families, our communities, and our nation.”
Faith in Action
The centennial celebration, attended by religious leaders, government officials, and thousands of faithful, highlighted the church’s role in education, healthcare, and community service over the past century. Museveni commended the Catholic Church for its long-standing contribution to Uganda’s moral and social development.
He encouraged Christians to continue blending spiritual devotion with economic productivity, saying that Uganda’s progress depends on citizens who put their faith into action through enterprise, innovation, and service.
Historical Context
St. Mary’s Lubaga Cathedral, located in the heart of Kampala, was consecrated in 1925 and serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Kampala. The cathedral stands as a symbol of Uganda’s deep Christian heritage and resilience through decades of political and social change.
The President’s remarks align with his long held message emphasizing self reliance and wealth creation, which has been central to his administration’s social and economic programs.
