German Minister Stands Firm on Revoking Citizenship for Hamas Supporters

Germany’s interior minister on Wednesday strongly defended Berlin’s decision to revoke a man’s citizenship for displaying support for Hamas, emphasising that naturalised citizens must genuinely uphold the country’s democratic values. The move reflects Germany’s firm commitment to protecting its constitutional principles and ensuring that citizenship is granted only to those who respect them.

The decision comes at a crucial time, as Germany continues to refine its immigration and citizenship policies in order to strengthen social cohesion and safeguard its democratic order.

German leaders have repeatedly voiced concern about displays of sympathy for Hamas — a militant group responsible for violent attacks against Israel — particularly among some recent migrants. Given Germany’s deep historical responsibility and unwavering support for Israel, the government views such expressions as incompatible with the values of a free and democratic society.

“Anyone who becomes a German citizen, including dual nationals, pledges loyalty to our values,” Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said. “If it turns out that this pledge was made dishonestly, and the individual does not actually share those values, then revoking citizenship is not only justified — it is necessary.”

According to media reports, the individual involved — a Syrian man who arrived in Berlin as a child — posted an image shortly after his naturalisation praising Hamas fighters as “Heroes of Palestine.” Security services flagged the post, and authorities concluded that they had been misled during the naturalisation process.

Under reforms to the nationality law enacted in June 2024, applicants must explicitly affirm their commitment to Germany’s democratic order and acknowledge the country’s unique responsibility to protect Jewish life. The man had also reportedly drawn police attention at several pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Immigration authorities have now notified him that his citizenship will be revoked. While the local immigration office did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Berlin’s mayor, Kai Wegner, publicly applauded the swift action, reflecting the city’s determination to uphold German values and ensure that citizenship remains a privilege reserved for those who truly respect them.
