U.S. Withdraws From Dozens of International Organisations, White House Says

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation withdrawing the United States from 35 international organisations outside the United Nations and 31 U.N.-affiliated bodies, according to a statement from the White House.

The administration said the organisations were found to operate in ways that conflict with U.S. national interests. While no specific groups were named, the White House stated that the entities support policies and programs it views as inconsistent with U.S. sovereignty, economic priorities, and governance principles.

The decision followed a comprehensive review of international organisations, agreements, and treaties in which the United States participates. The White House said the withdrawals are intended to end U.S. funding and involvement in institutions it believes prioritise global agendas over national interests or operate inefficiently, arguing that U.S. resources would be better directed elsewhere.

Requests for additional details and a list of the affected organisations were not immediately answered.

Since the start of his second term, President Trump has moved to reduce U.S. engagement with several multilateral institutions, including cutting funding for the United Nations, ending participation in the U.N. Human Rights Council, extending a suspension of funding for the Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, and withdrawing from the U.N.’s cultural organisation. He has also announced plans to leave the World Health Organisation and the Paris climate agreement.
