Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has firmly ruled out Slovakia’s participation in any further war-related loans to Ukraine, saying such measures only prolong the conflict and deepen human suffering. Speaking on the government’s position, Fico said continued financial and military support for the war stands in direct contradiction to Slovakia’s peace oriented policy.

Fico stressed that while Slovakia remains open to playing a role in monitoring a future peace agreement in Ukraine, it will do so without providing military aid or war financing. He criticised what he described as the plans of the so-called “coalition of the willing”, a group of EU member states backing expanded support for Kyiv, arguing that these initiatives risk extending the war rather than ending it.

Instead, the Slovak prime minister said his government prefers bilateral, mutually beneficial cooperation with Ukraine, grounded in direct negotiations between the two governments. He emphasised that Slovakia’s approach prioritises diplomacy, stability, and economic cooperation over loans or policies tied to continued military confrontation.

Fico’s remarks underline a growing divide within the European Union over how best to support Ukraine, as some member states push for sustained military and financial backing while others increasingly call for a stronger focus on peace talks and post-war reconstruction.
