What is Sodium Nitrite?
Sodium nitrite is a chemical commonly used in food processing to preserve meats, prevent bacterial growth, and maintain color. While safe in small, regulated amounts, high-purity sodium nitrite can be extremely toxic if ingested, interfering with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and potentially causing death. Its availability online has raised safety concerns, especially when sold alongside items or instructions that could facilitate self-harm.

Twenty-eight families filed lawsuits alleging Amazon allowed the sale of high-purity sodium nitrite, despite knowing it had been linked to suicides. Four of the families lost loved ones aged 17 to 27 after purchasing the chemical from third-party sellers on Amazon.
The families claim that Amazon failed to exercise reasonable care in permitting the sale and promotion of products that could be used for self-harm, seeking damages under Washington’s product liability laws.
Amazon’s Response
Amazon stated it disagreed with the court’s ruling and reaffirmed its commitment to customer safety. The company noted that high-concentration sodium nitrite is not intended for direct consumption and said it has restricted sales of products with purity above 10%.
