Kampala, Uganda has announced ambitious plans to construct a new railway line connecting it directly to Tanzania, a move expected to transform regional trade and unlock a faster, more cost-effective export corridor to the Indian Ocean.
The proposed rail link will connect Uganda’s rail network to Tanzania’s modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) system, providing landlocked Uganda with improved access to the Port of Dar es Salaam. Officials say the project is part of broader regional integration efforts under the East African Community (EAC).
Boosting Uganda’s Export Competitiveness
As a landlocked country, Uganda relies heavily on neighboring countries’ infrastructure to access global markets. Currently, most of its imports and exports move through Kenya’s Mombasa corridor. By establishing a direct railway connection to Tanzania, Uganda aims to diversify its trade routes and reduce dependence on a single transit corridor.
The new railway line is expected to:
- Lower transportation costs for exporters
- Reduce cargo transit times
- Improve reliability for bulk shipments
- Increase competitiveness of Ugandan products in global markets
Key exports such as coffee, tea, fish, cement and minerals are projected to benefit significantly from faster rail access to Tanzanian ports.
Strategic Link to Dar es Salaam Port
The railway will connect to Tanzania’s SGR network, which links the interior of the country to the Port of Dar es Salaam one of East Africa’s busiest maritime gateways. The integration is expected to create a seamless cargo movement system from Kampala to the coast.
Regional infrastructure experts note that this move could strengthen trade flows not only between Uganda and Tanzania but also across neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Burundi and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Regional Integration and Economic Growth
The railway project aligns with East Africa’s broader strategy to enhance cross-border infrastructure connectivity. Improved rail networks are seen as critical to boosting intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Ugandan officials have emphasized that the project will stimulate economic growth, create jobs during construction and support industrialization by improving access to raw materials and export markets.
Reducing Logistics Bottlenecks
Road transport currently carries the majority of Uganda’s cargo, contributing to congestion, road damage, and higher freight costs. Rail transport offers a more sustainable and efficient alternative for moving bulk goods over long distances.
By linking directly to Tanzania’s railway system, Uganda could ease pressure on regional highways while improving trade resilience in case of disruptions along other corridors.
Financing and Implementation Timeline
While detailed timelines and financing arrangements are still under discussion, authorities have indicated that feasibility studies and bilateral negotiations are underway. Public-private partnerships are expected to play a key role in funding the project.
If successfully implemented, the Uganda-Tanzania railway link could become one of the most significant infrastructure developments in East Africa in recent years.
