EU leaders urge de-escalation, civilian protection, and stronger regional defense cooperation
The European Council has called for an immediate moratorium on military strikes targeting energy and water infrastructure, as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East.
In a strongly worded statement, the Council urged Iran and affiliated groups to cease what it described as indiscriminate attacks, emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation and maximum restraint. EU leaders stressed that critical civilian infrastructure must be protected, warning that continued strikes on essential services could have devastating humanitarian consequences.
The Council also highlighted the importance of safeguarding civilian populations and maintaining access to vital resources such as electricity and clean water, particularly in conflict-affected areas.
In addition to calls for restraint, the European Council underscored the need for coordinated international efforts to strengthen regional security. It pointed to enhanced support for partner nations in bolstering their counter-drone and air defense capabilities as a key priority.
EU leaders further emphasized the role of existing maritime security missions, including EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and EUNAVFOR ATALANTA, calling for their reinforcement with additional assets to better protect shipping routes and regional stability.
The European Union has increasingly taken on a security role in maritime and regional defense, particularly in response to rising threats to global trade routes and infrastructure. Operations such as EUNAVFOR missions have been central to efforts aimed at countering piracy, securing shipping lanes, and addressing emerging threats like drone warfare.
The latest statement comes amid a broader escalation involving Iran and regional actors, with attacks on infrastructure raising alarms over humanitarian risks and global economic impacts.
As the conflict continues, the European Council’s call reflects growing international concern over the protection of critical infrastructure and the need for coordinated efforts to prevent further escalation.
