The United States has formally congratulated Mark Carney on his victory in Canada’s federal election, with the State Department expressing confidence in continued close cooperation between the two North American allies.

Speaking during a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce praised the historic relationship between the two nations, calling it “one of the most extensive and enduring partnerships in the world.”

“We congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Canadian people on a successful democratic process,” Bruce said. “The United States looks forward to working closely with the new Canadian government to advance our shared priorities.”

Key Issues on Washington’s Radar

According to Bruce, the Trump administration is keen to collaborate with Prime Minister Carney on a range of issues. These include:

• Fair Trade: Amid renewed trade tensions and tariff disputes during the recent campaign, Washington is expected to prioritize discussions on modernizing cross-border trade and strengthening North American supply chains.

• Immigration and Border Security: The U.S. flagged the growing challenge of irregular migration and emphasized the need for stronger coordination to manage the Canada–U.S. border more effectively.

• Fentanyl and Drug Trafficking: With opioid-related deaths rising across North America, the flow of synthetic drugs like fentanyl will be a top concern. Joint efforts on interdiction and enforcement are expected to intensify under Carney’s leadership.

• Countering China: As China’s global influence continues to expand, both nations are expected to deepen their collaboration on supply chain resilience, foreign investment screening, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Carney’s U.S. Ties Draw Attention

Carney’s extensive international background  including his previous roles as governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England has made him a familiar figure in U.S. policy circles. Analysts say his economic and diplomatic experience may position him as a reliable and pragmatic partner for Washington at a time of heightened global uncertainty.

While Carney struck a combative tone on trade policy during the campaign including criticism of former President Trump’s tariffs  U.S. officials remain optimistic that longstanding cooperation will prevail.
