In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said gasoline retailers should begin targeting prices of around $2.50 per gallon, arguing that recent declines in crude oil prices should be reflected more quickly at the pump. He also accused some companies of engaging in price gouging, which he described as illegal.
The president’s remarks come after global oil prices eased following a de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East and renewed diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran. Despite falling crude prices, average gasoline prices in the United States have remained significantly higher than Trump’s proposed target.
Last week, Trump said he had instructed the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate major oil companies and retailers over allegations that consumers were being overcharged despite lower wholesale energy costs. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent later echoed the president’s message, urging gasoline retailers to lower prices ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations and emphasizing that the administration is closely monitoring the situation.
