U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred international debate by reiterating that Greenland should be under American control, arguing that the Arctic island is critical to U.S. and global security.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 NATO Summit in Turkey, Trump said Greenland “should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark,” claiming Denmark has not invested sufficiently in the territory’s security while warning of increasing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. He argued that U.S. control of Greenland would strengthen regional defense and protect vital shipping routes and strategic interests.
Trump’s remarks immediately drew renewed opposition from Denmark and Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and is not for sale, while Greenland’s leadership emphasized that the island’s future will be determined by its own people. Greenland’s government has consistently rejected suggestions that the territory could be transferred to another country.
The issue of Greenland has been a recurring point of tension between Washington and Copenhagen since Trump’s earlier attempts to acquire the island. Although the United States already operates the strategically important Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, Trump maintains that direct American control is necessary to counter growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic, particularly from Russia and China.
Trump also suggested that the disagreement over Greenland has strained relations within NATO, arguing that Denmark’s stance has complicated alliance discussions on Arctic security. Despite the renewed rhetoric, U.S. officials have indicated that diplomatic discussions with Denmark and Greenland continue.
The latest comments are expected to keep Greenland at the center of international diplomatic discussions, as Arctic security, access to critical minerals, and emerging northern shipping routes become increasingly significant in global strategic competition.
