The United Nations Security Council has been warned that ongoing conflict in Sudan and instability in South Sudan are continuing to hinder progress in resolving disputes over the contested Abyei region.

UN Briefing Highlights Growing Challenges

Speaking before the Security Council, Martha Pobee, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, said the deteriorating security situation in both countries is severely constraining diplomatic and administrative efforts related to Abyei.

Commitments Reaffirmed

According to Pobee:

  • Sudan and South Sudan have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining Abyei’s demilitarized status
  • Both sides expressed support for reviving bilateral mechanisms aimed at managing tensions and disputes

These mechanisms include:

  • The Joint Political and Security Mechanism
  • The Abyei Joint Oversight Committee

Lack of Formal Engagement

Despite the renewed commitments, Pobee noted that:

  • No formal meetings between the parties occurred during the latest reporting period
  • Progress toward a long-term political resolution remains stalled

Strategic Importance of Abyei

The Abyei region has long been a source of tension between Sudan and South Sudan due to:

  • Disputed territorial claims
  • Ethnic and community divisions
  • Competition over resources and grazing land

The region remains under a special administrative arrangement supported by UN peacekeeping efforts.

Outlook

The UN continues to urge both governments to:

  • Resume formal dialogue
  • Strengthen cooperation mechanisms
  • Prevent further instability in the region

Observers warn that continued conflict in Sudan and political fragility in South Sudan could further complicate efforts to achieve lasting peace in Abyei.
