Newly appointed Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Kadhim al-Zaidi has unveiled a major national initiative aimed at restoring and strengthening the Christian presence in Iraq, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting one of the country’s oldest religious communities after decades of conflict, displacement, and persecution.
The announcement comes as Iraq continues efforts to rebuild areas devastated by war and encourage thousands of displaced Christian families to return to their ancestral homes, particularly in the Nineveh Plains, Mosul, and other historically Christian regions. The initiative also seeks to preserve Iraq’s religious diversity and cultural heritage while promoting peaceful coexistence among all communities.
Comprehensive Support for Christian Communities
According to the Iraqi government, the initiative will focus on improving living conditions for Christians through investments in housing, public infrastructure, healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and essential public services.
Officials say reconstruction projects will continue in towns heavily damaged during the occupation by the Islamic State (ISIS), with efforts aimed at making these communities safe and economically viable for returning families.
The government also pledged stronger legal protections for Christian religious institutions, churches, and cultural heritage sites while ensuring equal citizenship rights regardless of religious affiliation.
Reversing Years of Decline
Iraq’s Christian population has experienced a dramatic decline over the past two decades due to war, sectarian violence, terrorism, and economic hardship. Once numbering well over one million, many Christians fled following the 2003 conflict and the rise of ISIS, which targeted Christian communities across northern Iraq.
The capture of Mosul and surrounding areas by ISIS in 2014 forced tens of thousands of Christians to flee, leaving behind homes, churches, schools, and businesses. Although ISIS was territorially defeated, many displaced families have struggled to return because of damaged infrastructure, limited employment opportunities, and lingering security concerns.
Promoting National Unity
The Prime Minister said preserving Iraq’s Christian heritage is a national responsibility and forms part of broader efforts to strengthen social cohesion and national unity.
The government emphasized that Iraq’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths and that Christians have played an important role in the country’s history, education, healthcare, business, and cultural development.
Officials said cooperation with religious leaders, local authorities, civil society organizations, and international partners will be essential to ensuring the initiative delivers lasting results.
International Recognition
The announcement has been welcomed by many religious leaders and observers who have long called for stronger measures to protect Iraq’s Christian minority.
The initiative builds on previous government efforts to improve relations with Christian institutions, including support for the return of senior Chaldean Catholic leaders to Baghdad and broader reconstruction efforts following the liberation of ISIS-held territories. It also aligns with ongoing initiatives promoting interfaith dialogue that gained international attention following Pope Francis’ historic visit to Iraq in 2021.

The Iraqi government says implementation of the initiative will begin in coordination with provincial authorities and community representatives, with priorities including rebuilding homes, expanding economic opportunities, protecting religious sites, and encouraging displaced families abroad to consider returning.
