Speaking at a White House back to school event on Monday, Trump said: “Every public school in America is now on notice that if they tell a child that they’re trapped in the wrong body, they are committing child abuse.”
The statement forms part of the Trump administration’s broader push to place parents at the centre of decisions involving their children, particularly on issues surrounding gender identity and education.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the administration is working with the Department of Justice to ensure that schools do not exercise greater authority over children than their parents. She warned that schools could face the loss of federal funding if they sideline parents while allowing gender-related interventions involving students.
Trump’s message represents a direct challenge to school policies that involve gender identity and how educators respond when children express confusion or discomfort about their sex.
The administration argues that parents, rather than schools or government agencies, should have primary authority over major decisions concerning their children.
