Air Traffic Control Issue Disrupts Departing Flights at Major UK Airports

Departing flights at several major airports across the United Kingdom were disrupted on Tuesday after a technical issue affected the country’s air traffic control provider, National Air Traffic Services (NATS).

London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted were among the airports affected by restrictions and delays, creating disruption for passengers and airlines during the busy travel period. Heathrow said it was working with NATS to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

NATS Investigates Technical Problem

NATS said it was investigating a technical issue that was causing disruption to flight departures, with engineers working to address the problem. The organisation apologised to passengers for the delays and advised travellers to check the status of their flights directly with their airlines.

The issue appeared to be concentrated on departures, while arrivals at Heathrow were reported to be continuing. However, delays can spread through the wider aviation network as aircraft and crews become displaced from their scheduled positions.

Major Airports Affected

Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest international airports, was among the most heavily affected. Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted also experienced restrictions and delays, while Edinburgh Airport warned passengers that the technical problem could affect its operations.

The disruption also had implications beyond London’s major airports. The Isle of Man Airport said some flights could face delays, particularly services operating to and from London, although it stressed that the problem was not related to its own air traffic control operations.

Passengers Face Delays

Airlines and airports have urged passengers to check flight information before travelling, as the technical problem could lead to knock-on delays even after the underlying issue is resolved.

The full cause of the NATS technical failure and the expected duration of the disruption had not yet been disclosed. Further updates are expected as engineers continue working to restore normal operations.

The incident highlights the importance of air traffic control infrastructure to the UK’s aviation network, where a technical problem affecting a central system can quickly disrupt flights across multiple airports.
