Pope Leo XIV Returns to Public Prayer After Hospital Discharge

Pope Leo XIV has returned to public prayer following his discharge from hospital after undergoing surgery for lung cancer, reassuring Catholics worldwide that he intends to gradually resume his papal duties as he continues his recovery.

The 71-year-old pontiff appeared at the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St Peter’s Square on Sunday, October 18, to lead the traditional Angelus prayer. His appearance marked his first major public engagement since undergoing surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

The Pope was admitted to hospital on October 13, where surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung after a suspicious growth was detected. The removed tissue was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer. He was discharged on Saturday, October 17, after medical assessments indicated that his condition was stable enough for him to continue recovering at the Vatican.

Pope Thanks Faithful for Their Prayers

Addressing the thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square, Pope Leo expressed gratitude to those who had prayed for his health during his hospital stay.

“I have truly felt your support,” he said, thanking the doctors, nurses and medical staff who cared for him at Gemelli Hospital.

The Pope added that his experience had brought him closer to people living with illness and other health challenges, highlighting the personal impact of his hospitalisation.

“Now that I have overcome this delicate phase, as you know, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” he said.

Recovery and Papal Duties

Although the Pope has returned to the Vatican, his recovery remains a priority. His medical team has indicated that full physical recovery will take additional time, while further medical assessments will help determine whether additional treatment is necessary.

The Vatican had previously cancelled public audiences and engagements through October 20. It remains to be seen how quickly the pontiff will return to his usual schedule.

His planned November visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru is also drawing attention as the Vatican continues to monitor his recovery.

Pope Leo XIV’s return to public prayer has offered reassurance to Catholics and other observers following days of concern about his health. His message of gratitude, faith and solidarity with those facing illness has placed the focus on recovery while signalling a gradual return to his responsibilities as leader of the Catholic Church.
