Merz Urges EU to Boost Defence Spending in Paris Visit, Citing Support for Ukraine

Germany’s new Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged European Union countries to increase their defence spending to address capability shortfalls and maintain support for Ukraine.

Speaking in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, Merz stated, “Only in this way can we gradually close our capability gaps and collectively support Ukraine.” The two leaders emphasized a renewed push for European unity and cooperation, particularly through the Franco-German partnership.

This was Merz’s first official foreign visit as chancellor, with a trip to Poland scheduled next as he works to strengthen ties with key European partners.
