Pope Leo XIV on Sunday issued a strong message against the global rise of nationalist political movements, urging world leaders and citizens to embrace reconciliation, dialogue, and unity over division.
Speaking before tens of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square for Pentecost Mass, the pontiff warned that nationalism risks “eroding the bonds of fraternity and inflaming divisions among peoples.” He called on the Holy Spirit to “break down barriers and tear down the walls of indifference and hatred.”
The comments are in keeping with Pope Leo XIV’s broader mission to position the Catholic Church as a force for peace in an increasingly polarized world. Since his election, the pope has frequently addressed themes of global solidarity, migration, and interfaith dialogue, often pushing back against populist and nationalist rhetoric in both Western and non-Western nations.
“Let us not be seduced by the false promises of isolation,” he said. “Peace is not found in separation, but in the shared dignity of all people.”
His remarks come as nationalist parties gain traction in several countries, sparking concern among human rights groups and religious leaders over growing political fragmentation and xenophobia.
