U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he plans to significantly increase tariffs on India due to its ongoing purchases of Russian oil. In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticised India for buying large amounts of Russian oil and then reselling much of it on the global market for profit. He expressed concern about the conflict in Ukraine, accusing India of ignoring the human toll caused by the war.
“Because of this, I will be substantially raising the tariff paid by India to the USA,” he said, without providing specific details about the tariff increase.
Last week, Trump had indicated he would impose a 25% tariff on imports from India and mentioned additional unspecified penalties.
Meanwhile, Indian government sources have suggested that India will continue purchasing Russian oil despite the threat of heightened U.S. tariffs. These sources preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter.
