Anti government protests in Iran have entered a third week, spreading across several cities as public anger over economic hardship and rising living costs continues to fuel unrest.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the nation in an extended televised speech, urging calm, dialogue and national cooperation while pledging to resolve public concerns through economic reform and direct engagement with citizens. He stressed that peaceful protest is a legitimate right, drawing a distinction between lawful demonstrations and acts of violence.

Pezeshkian said the government is obligated to listen to public grievances and respond meaningfully, adding that authorities are holding daily meetings with market representatives, manufacturers and senior officials to ease economic pressures and prevent further disruption. He acknowledged the strain caused by inflation and currency volatility, saying reforms would focus on stabilising markets and supporting livelihoods.

The protests, which began over worsening economic conditions, have intensified amid reports of arrests and internet disruptions. Human rights groups have raised concerns about the use of force by security services, while Iranian officials accuse foreign actors of exploiting the unrest.

Analysts say Pezeshkian’s conciliatory tone marks an effort to de-escalate tensions, but warn that sustained calm will depend on tangible economic improvements and trust-building measures. With demonstrations continuing, the coming days may prove critical in determining whether dialogue can replace confrontation.
