China’s Top Diplomat Warns Against ‘Knee-Jerk’ Calls for U.S. Decoupling

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has cautioned against what he described as “knee-jerk” calls for the United States to distance itself economically and strategically from China, warning that such moves could destabilize global markets and bilateral relations.

Speaking on Saturday, Wang acknowledged what he called “positive signs” in recent communications from the White House but noted that certain voices within the United States were continuing to undermine the relationship between the world’s two largest economies.

Wang emphasized that cooperation, rather than confrontation, remains essential for global stability. He argued that efforts to “decouple” supply chains, trade, and technology sectors would harm both nations and disrupt international economic growth.

The remarks come amid ongoing tensions over trade policies, technology restrictions, security concerns in the Indo-Pacific, and differing geopolitical priorities. Calls within the U.S. political sphere to reduce economic reliance on China have intensified in recent years, particularly in critical industries such as semiconductors and rare earth materials.

Chinese officials have repeatedly framed decoupling as counterproductive, advocating instead for “mutual respect” and balanced competition. Wang reiterated Beijing’s position that dialogue and pragmatic engagement are key to managing differences while preventing escalation.

The statement signals continued diplomatic maneuvering between Washington and Beijing as both governments seek to recalibrate ties in a complex and evolving geopolitical landscape.
