UGANDA PRESIDENT SWORN INTO OFFICE AT KAMPALA INAUGURATION CEREMONY

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has been officially sworn in for another term during a high-profile inauguration ceremony held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in the capital, Kampala, marking the continuation of his long-running leadership of the East African nation.

The ceremony, held under tight security and attended by thousands of supporters, government officials and foreign dignitaries, formally confirms Museveni’s latest term following his electoral victory earlier this year.

Museveni extends decades-long rule

The 81-year-old leader took the oath of office before the Chief Justice, reaffirming his commitment to lead Uganda for another five-year term. Museveni has now been in power since 1986, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

The inauguration follows his victory in the January 2026 elections, which the Electoral Commission declared him the winner with a decisive majority.

Large turnout and international attendance

The swearing-in ceremony drew significant attention both locally and internationally, with more than 30 foreign delegations reportedly attending the event. Military parades, cultural displays and air force flyovers marked the celebrations at Kololo.

Government officials described the event as a demonstration of Uganda’s “political stability and continuity,” while supporters filled the venue chanting pro-government slogans.

Regional and political significance

Museveni’s continued leadership is seen as a stabilizing factor by some regional allies, while critics argue it reflects prolonged consolidation of power in Uganda’s political system.

Reports also highlight growing discussion around political succession, with attention increasingly focused on senior military figures within the government.

Opposition response and concerns

Opposition groups have reiterated concerns over electoral fairness and political freedoms, claims that have followed previous election cycles. However, government officials insist the electoral process was conducted in line with national laws.

Looking ahead

With the new term officially underway, Uganda is expected to continue focusing on economic development, infrastructure expansion and regional security cooperation in East Africa.

Analysts say the political landscape will remain closely watched as questions of long-term succession and democratic space continue to shape national debate.
