Russia unleashed one of its largest aerial attacks on the Ukrainian capital in months early Thursday, bombarding Kyiv with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in a devastating overnight assault that killed at least 17 people and injured nearly 100 others, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack caused widespread destruction across the city, damaging residential buildings, businesses and critical infrastructure.
The large-scale strike comes amid a renewed escalation in the more than four-year-old war and follows a series of Ukrainian long-range attacks on military and energy targets inside Russia, including strikes on oil facilities and strategic infrastructure. Moscow said the bombardment was carried out in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.
One of the Deadliest Attacks on Kyiv This Year
Ukrainian authorities said Russia launched approximately 496 long-range drones and 74 missiles, including ballistic missiles, during the overnight barrage. Air defence systems managed to intercept or suppress a significant number of the incoming weapons, but several missiles and drones penetrated the city’s defences and struck multiple locations across Kyiv.
Emergency services reported damage at more than 30 sites throughout the capital, with residential apartment blocks among the hardest hit. A nine-storey residential building partially collapsed after being struck, trapping residents under debris and prompting large-scale rescue operations.
Images from the city showed smoke rising over neighbourhoods, shattered buildings, burning vehicles and rescue workers searching through rubble for survivors.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the attack as a “terrible night” for the capital and confirmed that damage had been recorded in all districts of the city. Authorities declared July 3 a day of mourning for the victims of the attack.
Casualties Continue to Rise
The death toll initially stood at fewer than a dozen but climbed steadily as rescuers recovered bodies from collapsed structures. Nearly 100 people were reported injured, including children, with dozens requiring hospital treatment. Officials warned that casualty figures could increase further as emergency teams continued their search operations.
Hundreds of emergency personnel, firefighters and medical workers were deployed across Kyiv to extinguish fires and assist survivors.
Residents sought shelter in underground metro stations and basements as air raid sirens sounded across the city during the hours-long attack.
Zelensky Condemns “Massive Russian Strike”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault, calling it another example of Russia’s campaign of terror against civilians and renewing his appeals for additional Western military support, particularly advanced air-defence systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
Zelensky said the scale of the attack demonstrated that Ukraine urgently needs more air-defence capabilities to protect its cities and critical infrastructure. He also accused Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian areas.
Russia Says Strike Was Retaliation
Russia’s Defence Ministry said the attack targeted military, energy and airport infrastructure in and around Kyiv and claimed the operation was a response to recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure and strategic facilities. Moscow did not comment on civilian casualties in the Ukrainian capital.
The Kremlin has increasingly relied on large-scale drone and missile attacks in recent months, testing Ukraine’s air-defence network and placing growing pressure on its military resources.
Intensifying Drone War
The latest assault highlights the evolving nature of the conflict, with both Russia and Ukraine increasingly using long-range drones to strike targets deep behind enemy lines. Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and military facilities have disrupted fuel supplies and forced Moscow to devote greater resources to homeland defence.
Military analysts say Russia’s latest bombardment may be intended to weaken Ukrainian morale, damage infrastructure and demonstrate its ability to sustain large-scale aerial attacks despite international sanctions and battlefield challenges.
International Concern Grows
The attack has renewed international concern over th e intensifying conflict and the growing humanitarian toll of the war. Western governments have repeatedly condemned attacks on civilian areas and continue to discuss additional military assistance for Kyiv.
As rescue operations continue, Ukrainian officials fear that the latest assault may signal another phase of intensified Russian attacks on major cities, raising concerns that the war could become even more destructive in the months ahead.
