Moldova Faces Political Transition Amid EU Integration Drive

Alexandru Munteanu, Prime Minister of Moldova, has announced his resignation, a move that also results in the resignation of the country’s entire government.

Mr. Munteanu, who has served as prime minister since November 2025, made the announcement without providing a reason for his decision.

The 62 year old economist, who previously worked in the private sector and spent many years living abroad, was appointed to lead Moldova’s government with a mandate focused on economic reform, anti-corruption efforts, and advancing the country’s path toward European Union membership.

His administration was backed by the Party of Action and Solidarity, a pro-European governing party that has prioritized closer ties with the European Union while pursuing domestic reforms.

During his tenure, the government also faced significant challenges, including energy security concerns and the wider regional impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The resignation opens a new period of political uncertainty as Moldova prepares for the process of forming a new government while continuing its efforts toward European integration.
