Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially resigned as Prime Minister, paving the way for Andy Burnham to be sworn in as the United Kingdom’s new leader.

Starmer formally tendered his resignation to King Charles III during an audience at Buckingham Palace following a farewell address.

In an emotional final speech outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer reflected on his time in office, declaring that “my work is done” and highlighting Labour’s journey from its 2019 election defeat to its landslide victory in the 2024 general election.

Shortly afterwards, Burnham met with the King to receive the invitation to form a new Labour government, becoming the United Kingdom’s seventh prime minister in a decade.

The leadership transition marks the beginning of a new administration as the incoming government prepares to outline its domestic and international priorities.
