Russia says it is prepared to wait for new peace proposals from U.S. President Donald Trump aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, while making clear that its military campaign will continue until Moscow achieves what it describes as its strategic objectives.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Russia believes President Trump remains sincere in his efforts to broker a settlement and is open to further discussions once Washington presents new proposals. However, Peskov stressed that Russia is hopeful to a prospect of an immediate breakthrough but, will continue military operations in the meantime.
Moscow Signals Openness to Diplomacy
According to the Kremlin, previous U.S.-backed peace proposals were viewed positively by Moscow but ultimately failed to gain traction because Ukraine rejected them, with Russia claiming Kyiv acted under pressure from its European allies. Russia maintains that it remains willing to engage in dialogue if new initiatives are presented by the White House.
Peskov also criticized Washington’s dual approach of supplying military aid to Ukraine while simultaneously seeking a diplomatic solution, describing the policy as contradictory. Nevertheless, he said Russia is prepared to continue engaging with U.S. negotiators if discussions serve its interests.
Peace Talks Remain Stalled
Formal peace negotiations have made little progress in recent months. The last significant round of trilateral discussions involving U.S., Russian and Ukrainian representatives took place earlier this year before geopolitical developments elsewhere diverted diplomatic attention.
Although senior U.S. and Russian officials recently held brief talks during international meetings in Asia, no date has been announced for a new round of negotiations. Russia has indicated it would be willing to host future talks in Moscow if both sides agree.
War Continues Despite Diplomatic Efforts
While expressing support for renewed diplomacy, the Kremlin emphasized that Russia will continue its military operations until it secures what it considers a decisive outcome. Ukraine, meanwhile, has consistently maintained that any peace agreement must respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, while Western allies continue to provide military and financial support to Kyiv.
The latest developments highlight the difficult path toward ending the conflict, with both military operations and diplomatic contacts expected to continue in parallel as the Trump administration explores new options for restarting negotiations.
