Registration Begins for First National Vote in More Than a Decade

Authorities Seek to Restore Democratic Governance

Haiti has officially launched voter registration ahead of its December 13 general elections, marking the country’s first national vote in more than a decade.

Ten voter registration centres have opened in relatively secure areas of Port-au-Prince, with additional centres expected to open across the country as preparations for the elections continue.

The vote is seen as a significant step toward restoring democratic governance after Haiti has been without an elected president since the assassination of Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

Authorities continue to face major security challenges as armed gangs control large parts of the capital, complicating preparations for the election. Officials are under increasing pressure to improve security and ensure conditions allow citizens to vote safely.

The United Nations has reported thousands of deaths linked to the ongoing violence, highlighting the scale of Haiti’s humanitarian and security crisis as the country prepares for the landmark polls.
