New Maritime Framework Aims to Ease Navigation Through Strategic Waterway

Iran and Oman say they are in the final stages of drafting an agreement to establish new shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime trade corridors.

Under the proposed temporary framework, incoming vessels would transit through the Iranian side of the strait, while outgoing traffic would use the Omani side. The arrangement also provides for a 60 day period during which no transit tolls would be charged.

Oman is serving as the principal mediator in the negotiations, which are linked to a broader memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing regional tensions and restoring stability to Gulf shipping routes.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical gateway for global energy supplies, carrying a significant share of the world’s seaborne oil exports. Any agreement affecting navigation through the waterway is expected to be closely monitored by international shipping companies, energy markets, and governments around the world.

Officials from both Iran and Oman say discussions are progressing positively, although the agreement has yet to be formally finalised.
